Kolkata has once again been crowned the safest city in India, securing the distinction for the fourth consecutive year, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2023.
With 83.9 cognisable offences per lakh people, Kolkata recorded the lowest crime rate among 19 Indian cities with a population exceeding 20 lakh. The city’s performance has remained consistently strong over the years: 86.5 in 2022 and 103.5 in 2021.

In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma called the achievement "very positive news" for his team. He attributed the success to the citizens and the collective effort of his force.
