The persistent scarcity of drinking water in most coastal villages of Thoothukudi district has forced the residents to depend on water tanker lorries. Majority of the residents say that poor maintenance of pipelines, inadequate water supply networks and suboptimal implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in many of these areas have led to water scarcity.

Extreme drinking water scarcity in Punnakayal for more than a year has caused the residents to face numerous challenges, including deteriorating health conditions. Around 2,300 families in the village depend on the tanker lorries, as they were not provided sufficient water for their daily needs.
