Matthew D. Shoulders, a leading figure in protein biochemistry and synthetic biology, has been appointed head of the Department of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), effective January 16, 2026. A renowned educator and researcher, Shoulders currently serves as the Class of 1942 Professor of Chemistry and a MacVicar Faculty Fellow.
