For many Indian students, Canada has long been one of the most preferred destinations for higher education. With the United States tightening visa rules, rising costs, and growing uncertainties, Canadaβs openness, safety, work rights, and post-study opportunities have made it even more appealing.
A 2025 ApplyBoard survey found that 94 percent of Indian study-abroad aspirants still prefer Canada as their first choice.

Yet, this trusted destination is now under scrutiny. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently disclosed that 47,175 foreign students, around 8 percent of all international students, have been flagged as βpotentially non-compliantβ with the conditions of their study permits.
