HSBC’s privatisation of Hang Seng Bank ends the subsidiary’s publicly traded status after more than half a century. It comes amid worsening real estate loans in Hong Kong following a fall of 30 per cent in property prices from their 2021 peak across both residential and commercial sectors. The privatisation follows lay-offs at Hang Seng in May, ahead of a local HSBC leadership reshuffle last month.
