OpenAI is once again in the spotlight, and not for a model release this time. The San Francisco-based AI giant is being accused of using legal intimidation to silence its critics and sway the debate around Californiaβs new AI transparency law.
Nathan Calvin, 29, general counsel of a small nonprofit called Encode, ignited the controversy on Friday when he posted a viral thread on X alleging that OpenAI had tried to weaken Californiaβs Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (SB 53)βand used heavy-handed tactics to do so. Calvin claimed the company even weaponised its ongoing lawsuit against Elon Musk to paint critics like Encode as being secretly backed by Musk.
