The mayor of a rural Newfoundland community is offering a home to 30 beluga whales owned by Marineland Canada.

The Town of Burgeo sent a letter to federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson, proposing a sanctuary for the whales among a sheltered cove.

Mayor Trevor Green said he believes the whales can thrive off the coast of his town.

"It's an opportunity to relocate these whales, put them into a habitat that is more natural, I'll say.
