OpenAI CEO Sam Altman now seems to have his sights set on something even more ambitious: the brain. He is reportedly backing a secretive new startup called Merge Labs, which is said to be developing a non-invasive brain–computer interface (BCI) capable of interpreting human thoughts using sound waves and magnetic fields. Interestingly, he wants it without the need for surgery. The move appears to position Altman as a direct rival to Elon Musk’s Neuralink, whose brain implants require open-skull procedures.
