When 62-year-old Rajesh Menon, a retired banker in New Delhi, began struggling to pass urine, he first brushed it off as ageing. Then the discomfort worsened and his back began to ache. Menon finally sought medical help. The diagnosis shocked him: prostate cancer.
Menonβs story is becoming increasingly common in India. Prostate cancer is among the most rapidly rising cancers among Indian men, especially in cities. Dr Md. Taif Bendigeri, senior consultant urologist and transplant surgeon at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Hyderabad, says prostate cancer is now one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide.
