In a landmark order reviving one of Manipur's most contested alleged fake encounter cases, a court in Imphal has rejected the closure report filed by the CBI in connection with the killing of two civilians in 2009.
Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Imphal West, Sorokhaibam Sadananda, however, took note of the offences under Sections 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He directed initiation of trial proceedings against 12 personnel of the Imphal West Commando Unit (CDO) and the 39 Assam Rifles, holding them responsible for the deaths of Nameirakpam Gobin and Nameirakpam Nobo.

ABOUT THE 'ENCOUNTER'
The case dates back to the night of April 4, 2009, when a combined team of the Imphal West CDO personnel and 39 Assam Rifles claimed to have engaged in an encounter with militants near the election office.
