For decades, Australia has been a top study destination for Indian students β offering globally recognised degrees and post-study work opportunities. By 2024, the country hosted nearly 800,000 international students, including 17% from India, cementing its position as a global education hub.
But the balance is shifting.
The Australian government has asked universities to ensure domestic students remain in the majority, with Education Minister Jason Clare saying that Australian students must make up over 50% of total enrolments.

His statement comes as international enrolments now exceed half the student body at major institutions like the University of Sydney, Murdoch University, and RMIT.
