Kerala is now free of extreme poverty, says the Pinarayi Vijayan government—a declaration that has the ruling Left camp celebrating, the Opposition dismissive and experts sceptical about the methodology adopted to make the claim.

On November 1, the foundation day of Kerala, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government said the state had made a huge leap by eradicating extreme poverty, and based the contention on the NITI Aayog’s report on National Multi-Dimensional Poverty for 2022-23.

M.B. Rajesh, the minister for local self-government, explained that 64,006 families were identified as extremely poor back in 2021 and micro plans designed to uplift them.
