For years, Kotaโs crowded lanes have been the proving ground for some of Indiaโs toughest entrance exams. Teenagers chasing engineering and medical education dreams filled the cityโs hostels and coaching hubs while their names quietly remained on the rolls of โdummy schoolsโโinstitutions that allegedly existed mostly on paper. Or โdummyโ classes in reputed schools, which allegedly collected fees and issued attendance certificates for students to write their board exams.

That system is now being dismantled. This September, the Rajasthan High Court ordered a crackdown on โdummy schoolsโ connected with coaching centres. The order came while hearing a petition by two schools in Kota, challenging their disaffiliation by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for failing to provide evidence of students enrolled.
The court disapproved of the nexus between schools and coaching centres and condemned the proliferation of โdummyโ schools across the state.
