The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), an umbrella body of various Muslim religious organisations in Jammu and Kashmir, has voiced serious concerns over a recent government directive mandating the recitation of 'Vande Mataram' in schools. It called the move a "coercive directive" which was issued by the Union Territory's Department of Culture, requiring all students and staff to participate in musical and cultural programs commemorating the 150th year of the national song. The MMU termed the order "unjust, unjustifiable and un-Islamic".
