The Varanasi Municipal Corporation’s decision to impose fines for spitting and littering under its newly enforced Swachhata Niyamavali 2021 has not gone down well with residents, many of whom say the civic body should focus on awareness before punishment.

Under the new cleanliness regulations, implemented earlier this month, fines ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 5,000 can be imposed for acts such as spitting, open urination, or dumping waste in public areas.
