Demings is the first big name to enter the primary against former Rep. David Jolly, a Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat who has dozens of Democratic-elected officials already behind his candidacy.

Demings’ entry into the race marks the first time Florida has had two Black candidates running for governor in the same election cycle. Rep. Byron Donalds, the candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump, is the Republican front-runner.
