Moral of the Story: Even the righteous can meet a tragic end

Earlier this week, I watched 'Baahubali: The Epic' in Bengaluru. The joy of revisiting one of modern cinema’s great spectacles was tempered by the near-empty theatre. Yet, as the drama unfolded, the thunder of applause, whistles, and gasps from my first viewing in 2015 in Jaipur echoed vividly in my mind. A decade had blurred into bittersweet memory.

This time, I was less captivated by the gigantic waterfall, spectacular VFX, and action set-pieces, and more by the veins of tragedy running through it. Through the duration of 225 minutes of the revised version, I was engrossed in Rajamouli’s fusion of two great Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.

The parallels are striking.
