On Friday, more than a hundred campuses across the United States united in a sweeping wave of protests, as students, faculty and staff rallied against what they described as the Trump administration’s political encroachment into higher education.
At the centre of the protests is the administration’s proposed Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education, a directive inviting or requiring institutions to align with a conservative ideological agenda in exchange for federal funding. Critics call it a “loyalty oath” to political priorities rather than a commitment to independent research or teaching.
