Climate disinformation and information integrity are on the agenda at the UN climate summit for the first time this year.
Brazilian President Luiz InΓ‘cio Lula da Silva opened COP30 on Monday in the Amazonian city of Belem with a call for world leaders to "defeat" climate deniers.
"We live in an era in which obscurantists reject scientific evidence and attack institutions. It is time to deliver yet another defeat to denialism," Lula said, adding that COP30 will be the "COP of truth" in an era of "fake news and misrepresentation".
In the lead-up to COP30, UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres also put the fight against climate disinformation in the spotlight. He said the world must "fight mis- and disinformation, online harassment and greenwashing."
