Creating a pathway toward third-country resettlement is the only practical way to stop refugees from dying at sea.
Rohingya refugees are dying at sea again. Early this month, a boat carrying about 70 Rohingya people sank near the maritime border of Thailand and Malaysia. At least 21 bodies have been recovered; many were women and children. Just 13 survivors were rescued.
The vessel was one of three smaller boats that broke away from a larger “mother ship” that left Myanmar’s Rakhine State with about 300 people on board. The other two boats, carrying roughly 230 people, are still missing.
