Marrakech – Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE), former Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos (PSOE), and former Prime Minister José María Aznar (PP) all declined to participate in a documentary about the so-called Polisario “activist” Aminatou Haidar.
The film, directed by Lucía Muñoz Lucena, attempts to portray Haidar’s 2009 hunger strike as a heroic challenge and act of defiance against Morocco, while deliberately ignoring the increasingly pro-Moroccan positions of these former Spanish leaders.
According to the pro-Polisario newspaper El Independiente, the documentary “Aminetu” was recently screened at the International Sahara Film Festival (FiSahara) in Madrid.
The newspaper wrongly glorifies Haidar as the “Sahrawi Gandhi” and bitterly complains that Zapatero, Moratinos, and Aznar all refused to lend credibility to this propaganda piece by appearing in it. The publication falsely portrays these Spanish leaders as having “maneuvered to extinguish the political fire” ignited by Haidar’s hunger strike.
