Marrakech – Ahmed Ounaies has thrown a diplomatic grenade into the Maghreb’s political landscape. The former Tunisian Foreign Minister declared on Radio Jawhara FM that Algeria’s decades-long scheme to carve artificial states from the Sahara has crashed against the hard wall of reality.
The UN Security Council’s landmark Resolution 2797 has finally exposed what he calls “the fiction” that Algeria has desperately tried to maintain. He declared that Algeria has at last been forced to recognize the Moroccan nature of the Western Sahara.
The resolution, which explicitly endorses Morocco’s autonomy plan as the sole realistic solution to the dispute, marks the point at which international diplomacy ceased pretending and began acknowledging the reality long visible on the ground – a moment that many observers have described as Rabat receiving, finally, its official title deed to its historic territory.
