The United States first introduced the H1-B visa in 1990 under then-President George H.W. Bush. The visa was meant to bring specialised workers to the US to fill in for a domestic labour shortage.

Over 3 decades later, the H1-B visa has transformed the US economy with thousands of skilled international workers joining every year. India has been the biggest country for H1-B visa, with US Citizenship and Immigration Services stating that 71 per cent of all approved H1-B applicants in 2024 were from India.
