TORONTO — Kevin Gausman held a plastic cup of beer as he walked through the tunnel under Rogers Centre. Moments after the Toronto Blue Jays’ 3-1 loss in Game 6 of the World Series on Friday, Gausman stopped at a bulking obstruction by the left-field foul pole. A thin smile grew on his face as he realized the irony blocking his path.

“They had the stage ready,” Gausman said.
That’s how close the Blue Jays came to knocking off the Los Angeles Dodgers for a world championship.
With the winning run at the plate in Friday’s ninth inning, the monstrous World Series celebration stage sat at the entrance to Rogers Centre’s outfield. One more hit might’ve meant wheeling it onto the turf, popping champagne and sending Toronto into chaos.
