On November 3, the National Forensic Science Laboratory (NFSL), Gandhinagar, informed the Supreme Court that audio recordings allegedly implicating former Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh in the 2023 ethnic violence in the state had been βtampered withβ and were βnot scientifically fitβ for voice comparison. With that submission, the forensic report shifted the balance, perhaps in favour of the BJP leader, from potential incrimination to plausible exoneration.

The case remains pending before the Supreme Court, which has scheduled the next hearing for December 8, by when the petitioners must submit their response to the NFSL report.
