Indian-origin democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who has been elected as the Mayor of New York City, quoted from former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's speech in his victory address on Wednesday.

Addressing a crowd of supporters, the 34-year-old drew inspiration from Nehru's historic "Tryst with Destiny" speech, delivered on the eve of India's independence in 1947. Mamdani became the first Muslim, Indian-origin, and African-born person to lead America's biggest city after defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a high-voltage race.

"Standing before you, I’m reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words," Mamdani said, before quoting from Nehru’s iconic 'Tryst with Destiny' speech.

"A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance," he said, echoing the words delivered by the former Prime Minister when India attained freedom at midnight.
