A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake jolted the central Philippines late Tuesday, collapsing buildings and killing people on the island of Cebu, authorities said.

The shallow quake struck at 9:50 p.m. off the island’s northern end near Bogo, a city of 90,000 people, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the Cebu Provincial Information Office, the confirmed death toll has risen to 19 following the earthquake that struck late Tuesday night.
