Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Asim Azmi on Friday doubled down on his stance that he will not sing Vande Mataram, even as a protest was held outside his Mumbai residence, saying the national song was being used as a weapon to target him. Azmi said that while he respects the song and those who wish to sing it, no one can be forced to recite it.

"Our ancestors, too, have sacrificed their lives for this country. This country belongs to everyone, there is a Constitution here, and no person can impose their religion on another," Azmi said.
