It is now widely known that China has been focusing its attention on Okinawa, generating narratives about the island and its status. Among these narratives are the “Ryukyu Undetermined Status Theory.” Beijing has floated the theory that the San Francisco Peace Treaty is invalid, arguing that although Taiwan is part of China according to the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Declaration, Okinawa’s status is unclear. This has likely developed as a counter to recent discussions in the West, as well as in Taiwan, which assert that in fact Taiwan’s status is undetermined, and that Okinawa is a part of Japan.
