The government suspects that suspicious financial flows may be contributing to the unusual strength of the baht, which is weighing on the Thai economy.

Thailand’s government said yesterday that it will form a special team to track suspicious movements of funds, as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul vowed a broad crackdown on online scammers and human-trafficking networks.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Anutin has put Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas in charge of forming a team to investigate irregular money flows linked to online gambling and scam operations.

Ekniti told reporters yesterday that this “data bureau,” which will include officials from the central bank and other agencies, will synchronize data across government and financial institutions to detect unusual transfers and trace the ultimate beneficiaries of suspicious funds.
