Indonesian activists rallied yesterday in the country’s capital, Jakarta, to protest a plan to grant late authoritarian leader Suharto the status of national hero.
Suharto, who ruled Indonesia with a nailed fist from 1966 to 1998, is among the 49 names that Indonesia’s Council for Titles, Decorations, and Honors submitted to President Prabowo Subianto for review last month. The president will decide who deserves the honor, which is bestowed every year on November 10 on those considered to have made a significant contribution to the country.
