New Prime Minister Takaichi enjoys far more support than her immediate predecessors in the early stages of their terms.

Public opinion polls conducted by major media outlets in late October and early November show that the new government of Takaichi Sanae – Japan’s first female prime minister – has received debut approval ratings surpassing those of her recent predecessors. Not only that, but Takaichi’s Cabinet is seeing among the highest approval ratings of any Japanese government in the last two decades. Despite differences in survey wording and sampling, her government’s approval ratings ranged from around 65 percent to 83 percent, with particularly strong support among young and middle-aged respondents.

The Asahi Shimbun survey found a 68 percent approval rate for the Takaichi Cabinet – the third-highest debut figure for any government since Koizumi Junichiro’s in 2001. Support was especially strong among younger generations, with 86 percent of those in their 30s and more than 70 percent of those in their 50s or younger expressing approval.

Respondents cited the Cabinet’s policies as the main reason for their support, followed by the view that it was “better than other possible Cabinets,” and confidence in Takaichi’s and the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) leadership.
