There are many moments that define Morocco’s football history. To name but a few we can cite moment the legendary Moroccan goalkeeper Zaki Badou, escorted by another legend Aziz Bouderbala, proudly waved the national flag at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico, after a historic 3-1 victory over Portugal in the 1986 World Cup, allowing Morocco to become the first African nation to qualify to the 2nd round in the tournament’s history.
One can also think of the 1998 World Cup in France and the scene of Morocco players in tears after failing to qualify to the 2nd round despite an impressive 3-0 win over Scotland, and a previous 2-2 draw vs Norway. And despite the failure to repeat the 1986 achievement, the Atlas Lions’ performances in France were something to be proud of, not only for Moroccans, but for football fans throughout the MENA region.
