Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea met on the sidelines of the APEC summit. The meeting did produce an agreement, with (modest) results that both leaders can present to their domestic audiences. The Americans found a solution of sorts to the fentanyl issue, while also postponing Chinese export restrictions on rare earths. China meanwhile was able to prevent the U.S. from imposing an additional 100 percent tariffs as a countermeasure.
And so both Trump and Xi were able to return home with something to show for their efforts.
