At the time of my accident, there was the most amazing coming together of our local community.
My family, our friends, neighbours and associates, yes, but also people who had never heard of me before I broke my back, cooked for my family, lent them a car, got my younger siblings to school, sent flowers, organised fundraisers, and offered help in other ways.
It still amazes me just how lucky me and my family were, to have that support when our lives were thrown into chaos.
They were there to help pick up the pieces, to remind me that no matter how broken my body was, they still loved and valued me, that my life was far from over.
Wheelchair basketball showed me how special I wasn't
With all their showing me how special I was, it was para sport, wheelchair basketball to be specific, that showed me just how special I wasn't, something that was possibly even more important.
