Gamay, as Sydney's Botany Bay is also known, is home to the intersection of Indigenous history and European colonisation.

It was cared for by Aboriginal people, the ancestors of Bidjigal man Bryce Liddell, for tens of thousands of years.

"We've got stories from some of our old people that tell us about how the area has changed," Mr Liddell says.

The 27-year-old manages the Gamay Rangers program, which is responsible for natural and cultural resource management in the area.

He says those elders would once "look out across the bay from our mission, our Aboriginal reserve, and it would look really dark because it was so thick with seagrass, it was so healthy
