General practitioners in Queensland will have the ability to diagnose attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and prescribe medication, in an Australian first.
The changes will come into effect from December 1 and expand the scope of specialist GPs in Queensland, who can currently prescribe ADHD medication for patients from 4 to 18 years old.
ADHD is estimated to affect between 6 and 10 per cent of children and adolescents and between 2 and 6 per cent of adults in Australia.
