Wexford Festival Opera has rather shied away from baroque opera. In 1975, after the conductor Raymond Leppard and the Glyndebourne Festival had made Francesco Cavalli hot property, the festival featured Cavalli’s Eritrea, the first opera in Wexford to be conducted by a woman, Jane Glover. Handel came next, with Orlando in 1980 and Ariodante in 1985.
