(1) Air pollution during and after Diwali chokes cities

The air quality in several cities across India dropped during and after Deepavali celebrations last Monday, October 20, 2025. In Delhi, the overall air pollution on Tuesday (October 21, 2025) was about 15 times the limit prescribed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), according to official data. Several other towns and cities in north India also witnessed “very poor” air quality, as per CPCB’s data.

The NCR region recorded ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ air quality levels for six days straight before Deepavali too, provoking the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) to invoke Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR.
