A new chapter has opened in the Tata Trusts’ internal dispute, with trustee Mehli Mistry filing a caveat before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner after being denied reappointment to the boards of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. The move ensures that no decision can be taken on his removal without giving him a chance to present his side.

Mistry’s three-year term as trustee ended on October 28, 2025. A circular was issued on 23 October seeking approval for his reappointment as a life trustee. However, the proposal did not receive unanimous support, with trustees Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh voting against it. This created a majority that blocked his reappointment, effectively ending his tenure.
The decision has revived tensions within the country’s most influential philanthropic institutions.
