India has one of the world's largest higher education systems. It ranges from older, established institutions like IIT Delhi to newer private universities such as Shoolini University in Himachal Pradesh, which has built its name through research output. Despite such a range, Indian universities remain under-represented in global rankings.

Few feature in the top 200 of the QS or Times Higher Education rankings. International student numbers are growing, but not on the scale witnessed in countries like the US, the UK, or Australia.

Experts say the question is no longer about talent. India has strong students, capable faculty, and growing research pockets.
