The wars in Sudan, Gaza and Ukraine have led to an βepidemic of violenceβ against women and girls, the UK Foreign Secretary will say at the launch of a worldwide coalition to combat such crimes.
Yvette Cooper will tell the 16 Days of Global Activism summit on Tuesday that abuse is βcrossing borders at unprecedented scale and speedβ. She will pledge to make tackling violence against women part of βpolicies for peaceβ in countries such as Sudan.
βWith conflicts raging in Sudan, Ukraine and Gaza, rape is increasingly being used as a weapon of war,β she will tell the launch of the All In coalition, a panel of leading campaigners who have called the issue a global emergency.

βNumbers alone are inadequate but they should shock us nonetheless,β she will say in London. βOne in every three women and girls worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, 140 women and girls killed every day by a partner or close relative β more than 50,000 a year.β
Last month, Ms Cooper warned that protection for women from sexual violence was going backwards, with nearly a third of women and girls in conflict zones becoming victims. She said while the world experiences its worst cycle of conflict since the Second World War, more women than ever are being subjected to violence.
On Tuesday, she will call sexual violence a βscourge plaguing womenβ, causing an emergency at domestic and international level. The issue should also become part of policies on peace and security to tackle the use of rape as a weapon of war βfrom atrocities in El Fasher in Sudan to the war in Ukraineβ.
Ms Cooper will also pledge to βgo all in as Foreign Secretaryβ to ensure females around the world βcan thrive and flourish, free from violence and free from fearβ.
