US tech company OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has signed a letter of intent to build a massive artificial intelligence data centre in Argentina’s Patagonia region – the first of its kind in Latin America.

The Stargate Argentina project, announced by Argentina’s government on October 10, promised a partnership with domestic firm Sur Energy and an investment of some US$25 billion, according to a statement.

It was later clarified that the funds will be derived from Milei’s “Régimen de Incentivos para Grandes Inversiones” incentive scheme for major investments – better known as RIGI – and that Sur Energy will be leading the charge on the project.
