Scientists revealed Wednesday that they have uncovered evidence in the U.K. of humans intentionally making fire 400,000 years ago, significantly rewriting the timeline of when our ancestors first harnessed this vital skill.

Learning to light our own fires was one of the great turning points in human history, offering our ancestors warmth, a place to socialize and a way to cook food, which helped us evolve our unusually big brains.
