Fire and water restrictions are tightening around Hawke's Bay as dry conditions set in.

Hastings and Napier water restrictions have been upgraded to Level 3, meaning sprinkler use is now banned.

A total ban on open-air fires and fireworks, including paper lanterns, has also been introduced.

Hastings District Council said in Hastings alone, nearly 60 million litres of water was being used each day - the equivalent of 24 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
