The Brazil 135 is probably one of the toughest ultra-runs in the world at the moment, and completing it is no mean feat. The race spans 217 kilometres, with elevation rising to nearly 20,000 feet across mountains, valleys, and rough terrain. Add to this the presence of humid jungles and cold highlands during the run, which must be completed within 60 hours. It is a challenge that would test the toughness of the best runners β€” and India’s Pooja Krishnamoorthy is looking to create a piece of history.

For 21 years, no Indian woman has attempted to conquer the Brazil 135 ultra, and Pooja is hoping to inspire many more to follow in her footsteps. But it is not just about the miles she will cover. The ultra-runner will enter the course with a clear purpose and a cause larger than herself.

Speaking exclusively to India Today before heading off for the Brazil 135, scheduled from January 8 to 10, the Indian runner spoke about why she took up running, how her journey began, and the cause she will carry with her during the expedition in Brazil.

Pooja currently works as an advertisement producer and is the proud owner of Bowline, a small company that has already created ads for some big names. However, her journey into sport began much earlier. She became a certified mountaineer at the age of 11 and credits her family for fostering her love for the outdoors.
