The Election Commission (EC) released the draft voter rolls for Uttar Pradesh on January 6 following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a large-scale verification exercise aimed at cleaning up the list for future elections.

The draft roll retains the names of about 125.5 million voters out of the earlier total of 154.4 million, according to Uttar Pradesh chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa. This means around 28.9 million names have been removed.

In percentage terms, Uttar Pradesh saw nearly 18.7 per cent of its voters deleted from the rolls. This is higher than Tamil Nadu, which recorded deletions of about 15 per cent, and Gujarat, where around 14.5 per cent of names were removed.

Election officials said the deletions were based on three main reasons: death, permanent migration and multiple registrations.
