Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei acknowledged that thousands of people were killed during the protests that engulfed the country over the past two weeks, but blamed the US for the toll.

In a speech on Saturday, Mr Khamenei said thousands had been killed, “some in an inhuman, savage manner”.
