Launched with global fanfare as a gateway to Buddhist pilgrimage, Kushinagar International Airport in Uttar Pradesh is today largely silent, with government data revealing that no scheduled commercial flights have operated from the facility for more than two years, despite hundreds of crores spent and rising maintenance costs.

An India Today exclusive, based on information obtained under the Right to Information Act, shows a stark gap between the promise made at the airport’s inauguration in October 2021 and its present reality. The data, provided by the Airports Authority of India, indicates that scheduled flight operations have completely dried up since November 2023.
