Argentina was one of the 50 signatory nations to the United Nations Charter at the San Francisco Conference in June 1945, as World War II was drawing to a close. It managed to make that historic commitment despite active opposition from the United States, which distrusted the de facto government of Edelmiro Farrell and the United Officers’ Group (GOU), whose vice-president was Juan Domingo PerΓ³n. Argentina eventually abandoned its stance of neutrality, which had leaned towards the Axis, declared war on Germany and Japan and – with the backing of several other Latin American countries – succeeded in overcoming US reluctance.
